Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 17: Navy's valour in flood-hit Kerala has saved two lives. A 25-year-old pregnant woman, rescued from an inundated village in Aluva region of Ernakulam district, gave birth to a baby boy on Friday.

The woman, who was rescued a day earlier by personnel of the Indian Navy, has been identified as Sajita Jabeel. Her family members have thanked the Navy, Kerala police and the government which ensured that not only their lives were saved, but the baby was safely delivered.

Five teams of the Indian Navy, along with 10 columns of the Army and teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are working shoulder-to-shoulder in Kerala to rescue to the flood-affected populace.

The natural calamity, worst since the 1924 floods, has claimed 167 lives so far, the Kerala government said on Thursday. Over 1.65 lakh people have been shifted to the 1,067 relief camps earmarked by the state government. The camps are based in government schools, municipal corporations and churches.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to arrive in Kerala later in the day to oversee the relief and rescue operations. In the past week, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had toured the flood-wrecked state and announced an immediate relief of Rs 100 crore from the Centre.
