Kashmir's Government Degree College in Baramulla Face Students' Ire For Dress Diktats
Apart from the dress, the order also prevents girls and boys from mixing in the canteen or campus.
Srinagar, Aug 2: Students of the Government Degree College in Jammu & Kashmir's Baramulla has drawn flak from the students and a section of teachers for imposing a strict dress code.
The girl students have been instructed to wear a knee-long salwar kameez, which "should be in white-colour". They have also been asked to wear modest footwear, and refrain from any attire which is in contrary to the formal environment of the institute.
The boys, meanwhile, have been asked to wear formal pant-shirt, along with shoes. Jeans, t-shirts, flip-flops and other casual attires have been strictly prohibited.
The rules have been imposed by the disciplinary committee of the college, said one of the teachers while speaking to reporters on the condition of anonymity.
Expressing his frustration, the teacher said the disciplinary committee is indifferent to academic growth and progress. Their only agenda, he said, is to prevent the students from learning in a free environment.
The fresh diktat, the teacher claims, is due to the disciplinary committee's aversion towards girls and boys eating together in the canteen or working jointly on the projects.
School principal Fazal Rahim Beig said the diktat should not be considered as a reprimand, but only a reminder to the students that they need to adhere to the disciplinary code which they agreed upon while taking admission to the college.
Apart from the dress, the order also prevents girls and boys from mixing in the canteen or campus.
Unnecessary roaming /gathering, sitting on parapets in the corridors of the college buildings is strictly prohibited,” it states, adding: “The designated and specific place where girl students can take rest is Botanical garden/Girls’ garden and for the boys it is front lawn/canteen lawn.”
