Kashmir: Stone-Pelting Incidents Go Down Under Central Rule, Average Number of Daily Cases Was Highest During PDP-BJP Regime

According to data, the average number of daily incidents in the Kashmir valley was the highest under the PDP-BJP government between 2015 and mid-2018.

Srinagar, July 21: The Kashmir valley witnessed fewer incidents of stone-pelting under the central rule than the two previous political administrations. According to data, the average number of daily incidents in the Kashmir valley was the highest under the PDP-BJP government between 2015 and mid-2018. The average number of daily incidents was lowest during the National Conference-Congress alliance that stayed in power between 2009 and 2014.

In June 2018, Governor’s rule was imposed in Jammu and Kashmir after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) pulled out of the alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) forcing then chief minister Mehbooba Mufti to resign. After the six months of Governor’s rule, the President’s rule was imposed, which has been continuing. From July to till the end of 2018, the Kashmir valley saw 349 stone-pelting incidents. Thus far in 2019 (until July 17), there have been 355 incidents of stone-pelting, Hindustan Times reported.

The total number of stone-pelting cases registered under the PDP-BJP regime between 2015 and mid-2018 was 4,522 with a huge spike of 2,897 cases in 2016 when security forces gunned down Hizbul Mujahideen militant commander Burhan Wani in an encounter, shows the data over a decade. Kashmir Issue Will Be Resolved, No Power on Earth Can Stop It: Rajnath Singh.

Between 2009 and 2014 when the NC-Congress was ruling, the total number of stone-pelting cases registered was 2,690. There was a sharp spike in incidents of stone-pelting in 2010 when protests took place against alleged killings by security forces in the Macchil sector. There has been a marked improvement in the security scenario in the Valley ever since the imposition of Governor’s rule on June 19, 2018,  a Home Ministry official was earlier quoted as saying. The security forces eliminated over 240 militants in the state in 2018, while there has been a dip in injuries caused due to stone pelting, another official had said.
