Karunanidhi's Death Brings Tamil Nadu to a Halt, State to Observe One Week of Mourning as a Mark of Respect For the Kalaignar

As emotions run high after the death of DMK chief M Karunanidhi, Tamil Nadu will observe one week of mourning as a mark of respect for the former chief minister.

Chennai, August 7:  After an eleven-day health battle at Chennai's Kauvery Hospital,  DMK patriarch and five-time Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi breathed his last on Tuesday at 6.10 pm. As emotions run high after the death of DMK chief M Karunanidhi, Tamil Nadu will observe one week of mourning as a mark of respect for the former chief minister. Meanwhile,  reports inform that Puducherry Government has declared a holiday on Wednesday and has announced three-day mourning.

Karunanidhi's funeral will be held at Marina beach on Wednesday. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) services to Tamil Nadu have been stopped temporarily. The Tamil Nadu government announced a public holiday on Wednesday. The DMK Chief's health saw a significant decline in the last 24 hours due to multi-organ failure. Doctors stated that despite maximum medical support, he could not be resuscitated.

The final medical bulletin from the hospital read, "With deep anguish, we announce the demise of our beloved Kalaignar Dr. M. Karunanidhi on 07.08.2018 at 06.10 pm. Despite the best possible efforts by our team of doctors and nurses to resuscitate him, he failed to respond".

All movie screenings have been cancelled for tonight and tomorrow. Reports inform that theatre owners have said the ticket fares will be reimbursed to people. Thousands of Kalaigar’s supporters mourned outside the hospital after the new of his demise broke out on Tuesday evening. Condolence have started pouring in for the veteran leader. Karunanidhi, who was popularly referred to as Kalaignar (actor) was admitted to the hospital on July 28 after he contracted urinary tract infection and developed a high fever.
