Chennai, July 28: After days of treatment at his Gopalapuram residence, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief M Karunanidhi was rushed to Kauvery hospital in Alwarpet in the wee hours of Saturday due to low blood pressure. Shortly after he was hospitalised, a bulletin was issued by the doctors claiming his BP is back to normal. However, the former chief minister will remain in the intensive care unit for observation.

Karunanidhi was admitted to the hospital at 1:30am last night. The news triggered panic as scores of DMK supporters gathered outside the Kauvery Hospital fearing that Kalaignar's condition is critical.

The hospital, however, issued a bulletin at 2:00pm claiming that Karunanidhi has "responded well" to the treatment and is out of any kind of imminent danger. Shortly after the bulletin, senior DMK leaders, including MK Stalin and Kanimozhi, were seen exiting from the hospital and heading towards their residences.

Here is the latest update on Karunanidhi's health issued by the Kauvery Hospital:

“DMK president and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M. Karunanidhi has been admitted on July 28, 2018 in the intensive care unit of the Kauvery Hospital at 1.30 a.m. following a drop in blood pressure. His blood pressure has been stabilised with medical management and he continues to be monitored and treated by a panel of expert doctors,” the Kauvery Hospital says in a bulletin issued on Mr. Karunanidhi’s health.

VMK chief Thol Thirumavalavan, who visited the hospital last night, addressed the media at 3am. He said Karunanidhi's blood pressure is normal which "means he will be discharged soon". Thirumavalavan appealed the people not to fall prey to rumours.

Later today, senior Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mukul Wasnik would also be visiting the ailing DMK president.
