Koppal, October 25: Unable to endure the relentless harassment and abuse from her husband and in-laws, a 25-year-old woman in Koppal district tragically hanged herself on Monday, October 21. The deceased, identified as Hanumavva Gummageri, who had given birth to three daughters in four years, reportedly faced severe emotional and physical abuse from her husband, Ganesh, who expressed dissatisfaction with her for not bearing a son. Following the discovery of Hanumavva's body, local police arrested Ganesh and five others in connection with the abetment of suicide.
According to a Times of India report, Hanumavva's father, Basappa Kori, filed a complaint at the Koppal Rural police station detailing the abuse his daughter had suffered. Basappa alleged that the harassment began two years ago after the birth of Hanumavva’s second daughter, escalating with each subsequent childbirth. He claimed that Ganesh would often physically assault Hanumavva, particularly when under the influence of alcohol. As per the report, Ganesh pressured her to end her life due to his disappointment over having only daughters and failing to produce a male child. The Deccan Herald reported that on the day of the tragedy, Ganesh reportedly struck Hanumavva again after the birth of their third daughter, further compounding her distress. Basappa's complaint highlighted that the abuse was not just physical but also emotional, with Ganesh allegedly telling her to take her own life. The overwhelming nature of this torment ultimately led Hanumavva to take the drastic step of ending her life, leaving behind three young daughters aged four, three, and four months. In the wake of Hanumavva's death, police acted swiftly, arresting Ganesh along with his mother, Yallavva, and four others under several charges, including cruelty against a woman and abetment of suicide.
