Karnataka, September 23: Police on Friday arrested a 32-year-old man named Mogil Ashraf Baig from Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on charges of attempting to convert a woman from another faith and engaging in "unnatural sexual acts" under the pretext of marriage.
Baig had previously been employed at an IT firm in the area. He had a history with the victim dating back to 2018 and had been in a live-in relationship with her. The woman also worked in the technology sector in the same region, reported Dainik Jagran.
As per the FIR, the complainant, who is employed at a private firm in Bengaluru, met Mozif (32) a few years ago. The woman alleged that he initiated a relationship with her, promising marriage and coerced her into a physical relationship at his Bengaluru residence. The woman alleged that in January 2018, the accused attempted to convert her to a different faith by promising to marry her. However, when they began the relationship, he had assured her they would get married in court without any religious customs. She also alleged that the accused’s brother made threatening phone calls and instructed her to keep her distance from Mozif. The matter came to the fore on September 6 when the victim posted on social media that she was raped and forced into religious conversion.
“@PoliceBangalore @DGPKarnataka @PMOIndia @CPBlr Sir, I am a victim of lovejihad, rape, unnatural sex, and forceful religious conversion. Kindly provide me with police assistance in Bangalore immediately, as my life is in danger (sic),” she posted on X.
An FIR was filed in the Bellandur police station on September 7 after her complaint. The case was then transferred to the Hebbagodi police station since the incident occurred under its jurisdiction.
The police dispatched a special team as part of the investigation to Jammu and Kashmir to arrest the accused.
“Our team apprehended the suspect from Srinagar on Wednesday. He was brought to Bengaluru on Thursday and produced before the court here. We have got two days of police custody. The case is still under investigation. All the allegations are being looked into. We need to interrogate him in detail,” said Mallikarjun Baldandi, Superintendent of Police (Bengaluru Rural).
