Belagavi, September 13: On Monday night, while the Vasco-Nizamuddin Express train was travelling through Belagavi, eight passengers were discovered to be unconscious. The passengers were travelling from Goa to their homes close to Delhi when the event occurred. Before being transferred to KLES Hospital, they were hospitalised to this location's Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) Hospital.

Six of the eight passengers are still semi-conscious, but all eight are safe, according to medical authorities. Police believe they may have been given food tainted with poison by strangers in order to commit a break-in. Their possessions, meanwhile, are reportedly secure. Kerala: Death of Student From Kasargod Not Due to Food Poisoning; Police Suspect a Plot.

The victims, who are all men from the Khandwa region of Madhya Pradesh are in the age group of 22–25 years. When the train departed Goa at 3 pm, unidentified passengers reportedly brought them chocolates and biscuits.

After the snack, they all fell asleep and did not wake up despite repeated attempts by fellow passengers. The other passengers called the train police after witnessing the odd situation.

At 8.30 pm, when the train arrived at Belagavi station, railway police immediately dispatched an ambulance to transport the comatose passengers to BIMS Hospital. Dr Ashok Kumar Shetty, the director of BIMS, claims that poison-laced food, not contaminated food, is to blame for the eight men's severe condition. According to Dr Shetty, eating tainted food causes vomiting and dehydration. But in this instance, the males were unconscious for a considerable amount of time, he said.
