Mumbai, September 22: In a shocking incident that took place in Karnataka, a 32-year-old Dalit man allegedly ended his life by hanging himself from the ceiling of his house in Kolar district. Police officials said that the incident occurred on Wednesday night after the victim was allegedly thrashed with a broom by an upper-caste woman.

The woman not only hit the victim but also abused him at Huralagere in Malur taluk of Kolar district. According to a report in the Times of India, an officer said the woman was the wife of one of the friends of the victim. Vasanth Kumar, the circle inspector of police, Malur, said that Srinivasa and his friend, who were labourers, would hang out together after work.  The officer said that during a get-together, Srinivasa allegedly made obscene remarks and cast aspersions about the character of his friend's wife. This angered Srinivasa's friend, who went home and thrashed his wife, saying that he had to hear things because of her.

When the man's wife learned that Srinivasa had made the comments, she took a broom and went to his place, where she reportedly thrashed him and even called him by the name of his caste. Although neighbours tried to intervene and pacify the two, their efforts failed. Meanwhile, the cops have registered an FIR against the woman and her husband for abetment to suicide and under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
