Bengaluru, September 16: In a shocking incident in Karnataka, a 28-year-old Dalit man was allegedly assaulted by several people for entering a temple in Bagalkot. Police officials said that the victim, identified as Arjun Madar, was reportedly assaulted by a group of people on September 10 for entering the Dyamavva temple in Ugalwat village.
The incident came to light on Saturday, September 14, after Madar lodged a police complaint. In his complaint, Madar said that he was allegedly tied to a pole and beaten by a group of people for entering the temple in the Ugalwat village, reports The Times of India. Dalit Man Beaten for Entering Dyamavva Temple
A total of and arrested six people have been arrested so far in connection with the incident. While a probe has been launched, Bagalkot SP Y Amarnath Reddy visited the village to review the situation. Reddy said that a few people made public announcements in the village stating that Dalits should not enter the area where the upper-caste people reside and vice versa.
Police Urge People to Maintain Peace and Harmony
Meanwhile, the police and local authorities have asked members of Dalit and other communities to maintain peace and harmony in the village. After the incident, Dalit leaders also urged the police to take stringent action against the culprits. They have also threatened to launch an agitation in front of the district administration office in Bagalkot in connection with the incident. District minister RB Timmapur also took cognisance of the incident and said that six people were taken into custody.
