Raichur, August 5: Tarun Kumar, a class 3 student at the Ramakrishna Ashram in Raichur, was allegedly beaten with firewood, locked up and tortured for three days for an alleged pen theft. The main accused is the in-charge, Venugopal, and his two other aides, as the family of the boy files a case against him. Tarun Kumar, who had sustained severe injuries with his eyes completely swollen, has now been hospitalised.
As per India Today, Tarun said that two older boys and a teacher had hit him with firewood, and when it broke, they used a bat. They also caused cuts on his body, then took him to Yagdir to beg for alms at the railway station, but he didn't receive any money. He had been playing with his classmates who accused him of stealing a pen and reported the incident to the ashram authorities. It was when Tarun's mother visited the Ramakrishna Ashram, where both her sons had been staying due to financial crunch of his family, that this torturous incident came into light. Her elder son, Arun, had informed her about how Tarun was attacked and how his face was bruised. She alleged: "Another boy gave the teacher's pen to my son on Saturday since he didn't have one. When searching for the pen on Sunday, the teacher found it with my son, and this whole incident happened over a pen." She further added: "The teacher hit my child with two belts, blindfolded him, and tied his hands. The teacher also caused cuts on his legs and hands and beat him until midnight."
The child rights activists are now looking into the case. Sudarshan, a child rights activist, said Tarun Kumar has been rescued, and they have raised the matter of his abuse matter with the Women and Child Welfare Ministry. An FIR has also been filed again the accused Venugopal.
