Dandeli, September 20: 14 female students from a private school in Dandeli, Karnataka, shocked their parents and authorities when they were found to have cut their left hands with razor blades. The incident occurred after school hours, and the girls, who are in Classes 9 and 10 of a Kannada medium school, provided varying and unclear reasons for their actions. Parents noticed the injuries and informed the school, which then contacted the police and education department.

According to multiple reports, the cuts, located a few centimetres above the wrists, ranged from 14 to 15 cuts on some girl's hands. The students received treatment at a government health centre and are now safe, but they did not reveal the true motives behind their self-harming actions to the authorities. A police officer revealed that one girl claimed she harmed herself due to guilt over using offensive language towards her mother. At the same time, another mentioned her struggle to cope with her uncle's recent death. Karnataka Shocker: Man Dials 112 Emergency Number, Sends Cops Into Search for His Missing Footwear in Mangaluru.

A third student cited a classmate's decision to stop speaking to her as the reason for her actions. The district administration has enlisted the help of psychiatrists to counsel and support the emotionally distressed girls. Initial investigations suggest that some of the students may have domestic problems, and the case has been referred to psychiatric professionals for further evaluation. Karnataka Shocker: Father Hammers Two Children to Death, Attacks Wife in Mandya District; Absconding.

Dr Katte, the Head of the Psychiatric Department at Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences, noted that girls of this age are highly sensitive and emotional and may imitate their friend's behaviour when they perceive them facing problems. This incident underscores the need for early intervention and mental health support for students facing emotional distress, as well as the importance of open communication between students, parents, and educators to address such issues effectively.
