Karnataka Rains: Red Alert Issued in Dakshina Kannada for Two Days, Holiday Declared in Schools in Several Districts

A red alert has been issued in Dakshina Kannada district for 7th and 8th August, following continuous rainfall in the district. The Belgundi-Rakaskoppa Road in Belagavi taluka was flooded by river Markendeya waters on Tuesday.

Bengaluru, August 6: Heavy rainfall in Karnataka continued to affect normal life, triggering flood-like situations and water-logging in several parts of the state. The northern part of the state is reeling under flood-like situation after Maharashtra released huge volumes of water from its reservoirs following  heavy rainfall in the state. A red alert has been issued in Dakshina Kannada district for 7th and 8th August, following continuous rainfall in the district. The Shivamogga district administration has also declared a holiday for schools and colleges (government and aided) on Tuesday due to incessant rains. The schools and colleges will remain close in Sagar, Thirthahalli, and Hosanagara areas of Malnad region. Reports inform that 77,000 cusecs of water has been released from Tunga dam in Shivamogga. Reports inform that the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has cancelled all its Mumbai, Pune and Shirdi-bound bus services in the wake of heavy rainfall.

The Basaveshwar temple at Machakanur village in Bagalkot district submerged in Krishna river. According to reports, the Jamakhandi-Maharashtra state road has been closed after Krishna river overflows. Three villages in Jamakhandi taluk submerged.

The flood situation in northern districts of Karnataka continued to be grim on Tuesday owing to the outflow from reservoirs in the Krishna basin of Maharashtra. In the wake of the current situation in the southern state, the Dharwad district administration has set up helpline to address rain-related grievances and provide timely help to the people in trouble. The helpline number is  1077 while the WhatsApp number is 9480230962.

On Monday, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa had conducted an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas in north Karnataka to take stock of the situation. According to predictions by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), widespread rainfall will be witnessed over Odisha, south Chhattisgarh, south Madhya Pradesh, central Maharashtra, south Konkan, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Karnataka, northern Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in the coming days.
