Bengaluru, May 27: Normal life in Karnataka was crippled over the weekend as heavy rainfall and strong winds wrecked havoc across the state. The pre-monsoon showers in the city uprooted a number of trees and electric polls, thus leading to disruption in power supply in several areas. The heavy downpour is expected to continue, as the Met department predicts rain even on Monday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted 37.44 mm rain in the city on Monday. According to reports, Bengaluru will witness a partly cloudy sky on Monday with maximum and Minimum temperatures hovering around 33 and 21 degree Celsius respectively. After a heavy downpour on Sunday, areas including Shivajinagar, Koramangala, HSR Layout, Malleswaram faced power disruption while waterlogging affected traffic at several junctions in the city.
According to a report by The Hindu, the BBMP control rooms were flooded with complaints from citizens. According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, Bengaluru could receive heavy rain accompanied with gusty winds, thunder and lightning for another two to three days.
The IMD has predicted that India is likely to have 'near normal' monsoon this year with a well distributed rainfall which could be beneficial for the agriculture sector. The weather agency said that the seasonal rainfall is likely to be 96 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA) with a model error of plus or minus five per cent, Secretary Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) M Rajeevan said.
