Bengaluru, September 3: Heavy rainfall continued to lash parts of  Karnataka in the last two-three days. On Monday, water was released from three gates of the Linganamakki Dam in Shivamogga district of the state after the reservoir reached its maximum storage capacity due to incessant rainfall in the region. The dam is located at a distance of 6 km from Jog Falls near Kargal town in Sagar Taluk. Weather forecast agencies on Saturday predicted heavy rains and thunderstorms in coastal Karnataka from September 1 to 3. Karnataka Rains: 10,000 People Evacuated From North Karnataka, 53 Relief Camps Set Up.

According to Skymetweather, Honavar recorded extremely heavy rains to the tune of 121.5 mm in the span of 24 hours from August 31. Karwar also recorded 69 mm rainfall. The monsoon activity in coastal Karnataka are due to cyclonic circulation over Northeast Arabian Sea.

According to the weather forecasting agency, this year, coastal Karnataka received 13 percent more rainfall during the monsoon season, with 3,159.6 mm of rains. However, rains in Kerala have receded, and it is unlikely that the southernmost state will witness heavy downpour. Flood Wreaks Havoc in India: Over 220 Killed Amid Incessant Rainfall in Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra & Gujarat.

Meanwhile, very heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely over Odisha and Chhattisgarh. This year’s monsoon was reported to be normal as the country received 681.3 mm of rainfall till last week of August as compared to the normal of 674.7 mm.

Last month, close to 40 people had lost their lives in floods caused by heavy rains. The worst affected districts were  Dakshin Kannada, Udupi, Chikkamagluru, Hassan, Shivamogga, Malnad and Kodagu. Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa had announced Rs 5 lakh compensation to next of kin of the deceased.
