Karnataka Rains: 24 Dead, Flood Situation Remains Grim, 1024 Villages Severely Affected Due to Heavy Rainfall
BS Yediyurappa on Saturday informed that a total of 24 people have lost their lives in rain-related and flood incidences. Giving details about the devastation, the Chief Minister said 1024 villages across Karnataka are severely affected due to floods.
Bengaluru, August 10: Heavy rainfall continued to wreak havoc in several parts of Karnataka, flooding villages and towns and disrupting normal life across the state. BS Yediyurappa, Karnataka Chief Minister on Saturday informed that a total of 24 people have died so far in rain-related incidents. In the wake of the current flood situations, 20 NDRF teams, 10 Army teams, 5 Navy teams and 2 SDRF teams have been engaged in rescue operations. Moreover, the Chief Minister informed that a compensation of Rs 5 lakh has been announced for the next of kin of the deceased. The flood situation in the southern state has thrown life our of gear, as there is an increase in water level in the Kabini Dam of Mysuru with 46,000 cusecs of water. 40,000 cusecs of water has been released from the dam. Reports inform that most of the rivers in the state were in spate. Yediyurappa asked people of the state not to worry as relief measures were his government’s top priority. “Relief and rehabilitation work is our top priority. Farmers and people need not have to worry,” Yediyurappa told reporters. On Saturday, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said she would visit areas affected by floods and rains to assess the prevailing situation.
In Karnataka, the affected districts include Belagavi, Bagaklote, Vijayapura, Raichur, Yadgir, Gadag, Uttara Kannada, Haveri, Hubballi-Dharwad, Dakshina Kannada, Chikkamagaluru, and Kodagu. Reports inform that the backwaters of Tungabhadra flooded parts of Davangere district blocking many roads. Due to heavy rainfall, landslides were reported near Maranahalli in Sakaleshpur after which, vehicles moving towards Dhramastala and Mangaluru were turned back to Sakaleshpur fearing further landslide.
