Bengaluru, August 6: The heavy rains in north Karnataka has washed away homes and thrown lives off the track. The incessant rains in the last two days has led to the rescue of over 10,000 people. As many as 53 relief camps have been set up to accommodate the people affected by rains. The NDRF teams are on the ground and a red alert has been issued in six districts in the next 48 hours. A red alert has been issued in Dakshina Kannada district for 7th and 8th August, following continuous rainfall in the district. The Belgundi-Rakaskoppa Road in Belagavi taluka was flooded by river Markendeya waters on Tuesday.
The Shivamogga district administration has also declared a holiday for schools and colleges (government and aided) on Tuesday due to incessant rains. The schools and colleges will remain close in Sagar, Thirthahalli, and Hosanagara areas of Malnad region.
Reports said that 77,000 cusecs of water has been released from Tunga dam in Shivamogga. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has cancelled all its Mumbai, Pune and Shirdi-bound bus services in the wake of heavy rainfall.
