Karnataka Rain Fury Continues as Death Toll Rises to 48, BS Yediyurappa Urges Centre to Release Rs 10,000 Crore Immediately

Bengaluru, August 13: The southwest monsoon peaked in Karnataka since the last few weeks, triggering flash floods in several districts. The death toll in rain related incidents across the state increased to 48 with a loss of over 50,000 cr in the state. Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa said that the situation in the state is currently very bad and requested the Centre to release 10,000 crore immediately for the flood-ravaged state. Yediyurappa said he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday and brief him about the natural calamity in the state. "Situation is very bad. Home Minister Amit Shah and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also conducted inspection. Loss of over 50,000 cr in the state. On 16th Aug, I'm going to Delhi to meet PM regarding this", he said. Yediyurappa, who is in Shivamogga to review the flood-situation there said, "Today I will meet local MLAs in Shivamogga and discuss the situation. I request Government of India to release 10,000 crore immediately".

In the wake of the devastation caused by flash floods, Yediyurappa had earlirer this week, announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for each family, which lost its house due to landslides and floods in 17 of the state's 30 districts. "Rs 5 lakh will be given to each family whose house has been damaged due to landslides and floods. Provisionally, Rs 10,000 will be paid as advance relief to the affected families from Monday night," Yediyurappa said.
According to reports, the affected districts are Belagavi, Bagalkot, Bijapur (Vijayapura), Raichur and Yadigir, Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu and Uduipi in the coastal area. Meanwhile, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Shivamogga in the Malnad region in the central parts of the state have also been severely affected.
