Bengaluru, July 30: Starting from Thursday, August 1, Karnataka will implement stringent new traffic regulations, with the Karnataka Police set to file First Information Reports (FIRs) against drivers exceeding 130 Kmph. This decision follows a disturbing rise in accidents linked to high-speed driving. The move aims to curb the increasing number of fatalities and serious injuries caused by reckless speeding across the state. Karnataka's Additional Director General of Police, Alok Kumar, emphasised the urgent need for this measure to address the growing safety concerns on the roads.

The new speed regulations will be enforced statewide, covering all roads and not just highways. This decision follows alarming statistics, including a recent accident on NICE Road where a vehicle travelling at 160 Kmph caused multiple fatalities. The Supreme Court monitoring committee’s report highlighted the urgent need for stricter speed controls in the state. With 90 per cent of traffic deaths in Karnataka in 2022 linked to over-speeding, the new speed limits and technological enforcement, such as ANPR cameras and speed laser guns, aim to curb this trend and enhance road safety. All About New Speed Regulation

  • FIR for Excess Speeding: From August 1, Karnataka Police will file FIRs against drivers exceeding 130 Kmph anywhere in the state. This measure is introduced to combat the increasing number of accidents caused by high-speed driving.
  • Legal Basis: The enforcement is based on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)-Section 281, which deems driving above 120 Kmph rash and negligent.
  • Advanced Monitoring Technology: The enforcement will be supported by advanced technology, including speed laser guns and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. These tools, already in use on major routes like the Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway, will help police monitor and record vehicle speeds continuously, even at night. Karnataka Road Accident Deaths: 51 People Killed in 24 Hours, Highest Single-Day Fatalities in Recent Past; Reckless Driving Responsible for Most Mishaps. The introduction of stringent speed regulations by Karnataka Police starting August 1 marks a critical step towards enhancing road safety.
