Bengaluru, January 1: Karnataka Police on January 1, 2020, detained a group of people who tried to hoist "Uttara Karnataka (North Karnataka) flag" in Hire Bagewadi locality in Belgaum. The police arrived at the scene after they were apprised about the "separatist" flags being seen in the vicinity. The people have been taken into custody and the police has increased patrolling in the area after the incident, said reports. This is not the first time that an attempt to hoist a statehood flag of North Karnataka has been made by a group. Organisations such as the Karunada Horata Samiti, Hyderabad Karnataka Pratyeka Rajya Horata Samiti and a few others have time and again demanded separate statehood for North Karnataka and Hyderabad Karnataka region. The police prevented the group from hoisting flags bearing the map of North Karnataka and Hyderabad Karnataka region. Police said that members of the group who tried to hoist the flags will be taken in preventive custody and will be released later. Reports said that slogans were raised against the state government during attempts to hoist North Karnataka flags.
