Bengaluru, December 22: A man from Karnataka, who was returning from a demonstration in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Bengaluru, on Sunday was attacked with sharp weapons by unidentified people. The victim has been identified as Varun. He was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital. Police have started an investigation into the case. Earlier in the day, students, human rights activists and other protesters gather at Town Hall in Bengaluru to stage a demonstration against the act and National Register of Citizens (NRC). A total of 24 people were booked, and eight cases have been registered for protesting against the act in Bengaluru on Friday. Cases were also registered against MLA Rizwan Arshad and historian Ramachandra Guha. On Friday, protesters gathered at the Town Hall here and raised slogans against the government. Meanwhile, in Mangaluru two protesters died allegedly in the police firing.
The Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019 was passed in the Rajya Sabha on December 11. On the next day, President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the bill. Critiques of the Narendra Modi government considered the act as discriminatory against a particular section of society as it grants citizenship to non-Muslim migrants including Hindus, Sikhs, Parsis, Buddhists and Jains.
