Karnataka Legislature Passes Bill to Exempt CM's Political Secretary From 'Office-of-Profit' Clause
Karnataka Assembly on the last day of winter session on Friday passed a bill that exempts a legislator appointed as the chief minister’s political secretary from the office-of-profit clause.
Bengaluru, December 22: Both the houses of Karnataka Legislature on Friday passed a bill that exempts a legislator appointed as the chief minister’s political secretary from the office-of-profit clause. The Prevention of Disqualification (Amendment) Bill, 2018 was passed both the houses of the legislature without any debate. As per reports, state Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy is planning to appoint some dissatisfied MLA’s who were upset with the government for not being given ministerial posts, as his political secretaries. Meanwhile, parliamentary secretaries are already exempted from disqualification under the office-of-profit clause. The bill was passed amid sloganeering by the opposition. A political secretary to CM is entitled to salaries and facilities like bungalows, vehicles, travel and dearness allowances like cabinet ministers. Both the houses of Karnataka legislature also passed a bill to protect the interests of SC, ST and OBC candidates during recruitment to state civil services. The assembly also passed Rai Technology University, Bengaluru (Amendment) Bill, 2018. This bill was by the Assembly earlier but re-introduced incorporating the amendments. After passing these three bills, both the houses adjourned sine die.
