Karnataka: Journalists Stage Protest After Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri Bars Live Media Coverage of Assembly Proceedings

Bengaluru, October 11: Two days after Karnataka Assembly Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri barred live streaming of assembly proceedings by TV news channels, journalists in the state have staged a protest and are demanding the Speaker to take back the decision. City-based journalists gathered at Maurya Circle of the state capital on Friday and protested against the move.

Following the protest by the journalist, Janata Dal (Secular) national president HD Deve Gowda extended his support, and the ruling dispensation is trying to snatch the freedom of the press. He said, "This kind of attitude of the present govt shows that it is intentionally snatching the freedom of media going on for decades. We hope and trust that this govt will reconsider its decision." Earlier on Wednesday, the Speaker informed that the visuals of the proceedings would be shared later with media personnel, however, barred the live streaming of assembly proceedings by TV news channels. Following this, the opposition claimed that this move would have serious repercussions. It is to be known that two trust votes have been streamed live in which the incumbent CMs have been losing the confidence motion previously.
