Bengaluru, July 28: Tensions erupted in Karnataka recently when a consignment of meat weighing about three tonnes loaded in about 150 cartons landed at Bengaluru City Railway Station from Jaipur in a train on Friday night, July 26. After the consignment landed in the city, Hindu activists alleged that the cartons contained dog meat. Abdul Razzaq, a meat dealer who had ordered the meat, dismissed the alleged claims. Now, officials of the food safety commissioner confirmed that the consignment contained goat meat.
According to a report in the Times of India, the police seized 90 insulated boxes with 2,700kg of meat that had arrived by train from Jaipur on July 26. However, tensions prevailed when activists alleged the transportation of dog meat. The activists claimed that dog meat was illegally sold in Bengaluru, brought from other states, and served in Bengaluru. However, the officials have confirmed that the consignment that arrived in the city Friday evening contained "chevon" (goat meat) packed in insulated boxes. After a controversy erupted over dog meat transported in Karnataka's capital city, the police registered 3 FIRs. One FIR alleged transportation of dog meat, while another was filed against cow vigilante Puneet Kerehalli, who obstructed officials of the food quality department from discharging their duty.

A third FIR was filed against Puneet and his four associates for unlawful assembly in a public place. Speaking about the alleged claims of dog meat served in the city, K Srinivas, commissioner of food safety, said that dog meat was not sold in Bengaluru. He also said that the parcel from Jaipur had "chevon," the meat of a special breed of goat, Sirohi, which is largely found in Rajasthan and Kutch-Bhuj areas of Gujarat. Srinivas further said that goats have an elongated tail and spots that could confuse people into thinking they are dogs. "There were no signs of dog meat in the samples," he added. The food safety commissioner also said that traders in Bengaluru source meat from other states as there is a short supply of mutton and "chevon." It is also learned that there is a severe scarcity of "chevon" in Bengaluru.
