Bengaluru, December 16: At least six workers were killed after a boiler exploded in a Nirani sugar factory in Mudhol in Karnataka’s Bagalkote district on Sunday. According to a tweet by ANI, five other people have also been critically injured in the blast. The deceased are yet to be identified as their faces have suffered serious burn injuries. As soon as the blast was reported, firefighters rushed to the spot and began the rescue operations. The cause of the blast is not known yet. The injured have been rushed to the Mudhol Hospital. According to reports, the sugar factory is a unit under the Nirani Sugars Limited. The factory is owned by the Nirani brothers- BJP MLA Murugesh Nirani and his brothers Sangamesh and Hanumantha. A report by News 18 informs that the explosion took place in a treatment plant which is about half a kilometre from the factory. There were around 1,000 workers in the factory, while there were seven people working in the treatment plant.

Earlier this week, a similar incident was reported from Hyderabad where a scientist lost his life after a suspected hydrogen cylinder blast. The blast took place at an aerospace lab at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru. The deceased scientist was identified as 32-year-old Manoj Kumar, who was from Hyderabad.
