New Delhi, April 6: After Kanishak Kataria secured the top spot in the 2018 UPSC final exam results, celebrations broke out at Kataria household in Rajasthan on Friday. Kanishak, an IIT Bombay alumnus, said he was surprised by the result and couldnt believe that he had topped the civil services final examination. Apart from thanking his parents, sister for the support, he also thanked his girlfriend for her moral support. "It's a very surprising moment. I never expected to get the 1st rank. I thank my parents, sister & my girlfriend for the help & moral support. People will expect me to be a good administrator & that's exactly my intention," Kataria was quoted by ANI.

Kanishak was followed by Akshat Jain and Junaid Ahmad in the top-three. Meanwhile, Srushti Jayant Deshmukh, who secured the fifth rank, was the topper among female candidates. According to reports, Kataria, who is a BTech (Computer Science and Engineering), belongs to SC category and qualified the examination with mathematics as his optional subject. The final ranks were announced based on the results of the written part of Civil Services Examination, 2018 held by the UPSC in September-October, 2018 while the interviews for Personality Test held in February-March, 2019. UPSC Civil Services Exam: Niti Aayog Mulls Reducing the Upper Age Limit to 27 Years From Present 30 Years.

The UPSC, in its statement announced that a total of 759 candidates (577 men and 182 women) were recommended for appointment in Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, Indian Police Service, and Central Services.
