Mumbai, October 28: A junction in Kandivali was named Assumption Chowk on Sunday in the presence of BJP Mumbai chief Ashish Shelar and priests and members of the Bombay Catholic Sabha (BCS). The junction was named Assumption Chowk after 157-year-old Our Lady of Assumption Church in the neighbourhood.
Bishop John Rodrigues unveiled a beautiful black granite plaque engraved with gold letters to declare the junction as Assumption Chowk officially. BJP MP Gopal Shetty, Charkop MLA Yogesh Sagar and MLC Vijay Girkar were also present at the event. The campaign to name the junction as Assumption Chowk was spearheaded by the BCS.
"In 2014, then parish priest Fr Elias D'Cunha envisioned this chowk. He inspired BCS to secure sanction along with corporator Shailaja Girkar. After Girkar's sudden death it was at her husband MLC Vijay Girkar's intervention that we finally received the permission to name the junction Assumption Chowk," Ronald D'Souza of BCS was quoted as saying by TOI.
