Justice Served in Assam: Man Gets Death Penalty for Raping and Murdering Tribal Girl in Hailakandi

The girl, a resident of Betcherra village, bordering Mizoram, was raped and killed by Borbhuiyan on March 14. Reports inform that the district and Sessions Judge Debasish Bhattacharjee had announced the quantum of punishment days after he convicted Borbhuyian in connection with the rape and murder case.

Guwahati, October 4: A man from Assam was given a death penalty for raping and murdering a minor girl in Hailakandi district of Assam. According to a report by PTI, a local court on Thursday awarded death penalty to the accused in connection with the rape and murder of the 13-year-old minor. The accused has been identified as Jashimuddin Borbhuyian. The girl, a resident of Betcherra village, bordering Mizoram, was raped and killed by Borbhuiyan on March 14. Reports inform that the district and Sessions Judge Debasish Bhattacharjee had announced the quantum of punishment days after he convicted Borbhuyian in connection with the rape and murder case. Assam: '4,130 Rapes, Over 15,000 Dowry Cases' Registered in Last 2 Years.

The accused has been held guilty on Monday under sections 376 (rape) and 302 (murder) of the IPC read with section 4 of POCSO Act. The brutal incident came to light after the incident led to public outrage and rallies in the district. People carried out protest marches demanding strict punishment for the perpetrator. Congratulating Superintendent of Police Mohneesh Mishra and his team, Hailakandi Deputy Commissioner, Adil Khan was quoted by PTI saying, "The SP and his team delivered what we had promised to the people of Hailakandi six months ago. "This will reaffirm the faith of the common man in our administration, police, judiciary and the entire criminal justice system".

According to a PTI report, the brutal incident took place when the victim was alone at her house in Hailakandi district’s Betcherra Purabshree village. It must be noted that the village is located along the Assam-Mizoram border. The parents of the victim lodged a case at the Jamira police station, following which the accused was nabbed on March 16 and the murder weapon was recovered by the Police.
