New Delhi, October 3: Justice Ranjan Gogoi is set to take oath as the Chief Justice of India on Wednesday after Justice Dipak Mishra retired from the post on October 1. Justice Gogoi will be 46th Chief Justice of India and have a term of 13 months 15 days in the office. Gogoi was one of the four top court judges who launched the virtual revolt against Justice Mishra over various issue including allotment of cases to by Justice Mishra to different judges. Gogoi was appointed as the Supreme Court judge on April 23, 2012. Born on November 18, 1954, he began his legal careers in 1978 as an advocate in Gauhati High Court. In 2001, he was appointed as permanent judge of Gauhati High Court. He was elevated to Supreme Court from the Punjab High Court where he was Chief Justice for more than a year. He has been part of some important cases including Assam NRC and setting up a special court for hearing criminal cases against sitting or former lawmakers.
In 2016, Justice Gogoi created a stir when he issued a contempt noticed to the former Judge of court, Justice Markandeya Katju for posting defaming statement against the judges in his facebook post. However, the proceeding of the court was later dropped after Katju apologised to the court for his Facebook post.
