New Delhi, October 3: Justice Ranjan Gogoi, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, was sworn-in as the new Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Wednesday after the retirement of CJI Dipak Misra on October 1. The 63-year old CJI took the oath as the new Chief Justice of India in a brief ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan which was administered by President Ram Nath Kovind and became the 46th Chief Justice of India. On the first day of his office in Court number 1 with Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and KM Joseph, Gogoi said, "We are not going to hear any mentioning from today. We will set a parameter for cases."

Gogoi had praised the outgoing CJI Dipak Misra saying that his greatest contribution has been to civil liberties, and cited his recent verdicts in this regard. Following the principle of seniority, Misra on September 4 had recommended the name of Justice Ranjan Gogoi as his successor. Reports inform that as per convention, the outgoing Chief Justice sends the recommendation about his successor 30 days before he is to demit office so that the Chief Justice-designate is named well in time. Here’s all you need to know about the new CJI:

  1. Justice Ranjan Gogoi has been sworn-in as the 46th Chief Justice of India (CJI). He will have a tenure of a little over 13 months and would retire on November 17, 2019.

  2. The new CJI is the son of former Assam Chief Minister Keshab Chandra Gogoi.

  3. Born on November 18, 1954, Gogoi did his schooling in Don Bosco School Dibrugarh and then studied history in Delhi University's St Stephen's College.

  4. He was enrolled as an advocate in 1978 and practised in the Gauhati High Court on constitutional, taxation and company matters.

  5. Gogoi, who is from Assam has headed the special bench that is monitoring the updation of National Register of Citizens to identify citizens in the northeastern state.

  6. He was appointed as a permanent judge of the Guwahati high court on February 28, 2001.

  7. He was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana high court on September 9, 2010. He was appointed as chief justice of Punjab and Haryana high court on February 12, 2011

  8. Justice Gogoi was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court on April 23, 2012.

Former CJI Dipak Misra retired on October 1 after serving a 14-month tenure. The 64-year old seniormost judge will be remembered in the Indian judicial history as the only head of the top court who saw rebellion by four of his senior most colleagues. During his tenure, Misra presided over a bench that decriminalised homosexuality, allowed the entry of women of all ages in Sabarimala temple, decriminalised adultery and curbed the use of Aadhaar. Justice Ranjan Gogoi to be Sworn in as 46th Chief Justice of India as President Clears Appointment. 

It must be noted that Justice Gogoi is one of the four Supreme Court judges who had held the unprecedented press conference in January citing that democracy in the country was under threat. They had raised concerns about the administration in the Supreme court, saying it was "not in order". The other three judges were -- Justice J. Chelameswar (now retired), Justice M. B. Lokur and Justice Kurian Joseph.
