Joka Metro Work at Site of Majerhat Bridge Collapse Resumes
The Metro work, which was stalled due to the Majerhat bridge collapse on September 4, has finally began with the clearing of the debris.
Kolkata, October 30: Gammon India, which is heading the Joka- Esplanade Metro project, which was stalled due to the Majerhat bridge collapse, has managed to clear the rubble and waste from the area of construction of the Metro work. The Metro work, which was stalled due to the bridge collapse on September 4, has finally began with the clearing of the debris, reported The Times of India.
A section of a bridge in South Kolkata's Majerhat came crashing down on Tuesday, September 4, following which the State government, along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), launched a rescue operation on a war-footing. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced compensation of Rs. 5 lakh to the families of those killed in the Majerhat bridge collapse.
The Chief Minister had said at the time of announcing the compensation that though money and job can't compensate lives, still a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh will be given to the kin of the deceased. She had also assured that her government will take necessary steps and look into the records of the bridges which need to be repaired.
After the bridge collapse, it came to light that earlier in July, Eastern Railways had alerted the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) about the weakening structure of the bridge. The Eastern Railways had informed the KDMA about weak support beams, exposed reinforcements and even cracks on piers of Majerhat Bridge but no action was taken. CM Mamata Banerjee later termed the PWD department responsible for the bridge collapse.
