JNU Violence Updates: Over 40 Injured in Attack on Students, Teachers by Masked Mob, No Arrests by Delhi Police So Far

Around 50 masked men attacked Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students and vandalised hostels on Sunday evening. University student union president Aishe Ghosh was several others who were severely injured in the attack. Several professors were also sustained injuries.

The violence at the JNU campus left around 40, including University students and teachers, injured on Sunday evening. The assault was perpetrated by a masked mob which barged into the campus. Later, the police was called in to bring the situation under control. After conducting a flag march, the police said the situation is normal in the campus. The students' union has, however, alleged that the hooligans are still lurking in the campus and posing a threat to the safety of students.

"Such violence on university campus is completely against the ethos of this country. No matter what the ideology or bent of mind, students cannot be targeted this way. Strictest punishment has to be meted out to these goons who have dared to enter the University," said East Delhi BJP MP Gautam Gambhir on the attack on students at the JNU by a group of masked men.

The mob also attacked team of doctors who reached JNU to give first aid to injured students. The Mob manhandled the doctors and broke window glass of the ambulance.

One of the Doctors of the Team Tweeted, "Our team of doctors, nurses & medical volunteers who reached JNU to give first aid to injured students & teachers, was attacked by hundreds of goons. Mob manhandled doctors, nurses & threatened them. Our ambulance’s glass & windows broken, this is totally inhuman & insane."

"It is unfortunate that violence took place in JNU campus this evening. The administration strongly condemns any form of violence in the campus. The JNU administration feels great pain and anguish for the students who have sustained injuries in the violence," said the statement issued by the Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra lashed out the Narendra Modi government over the JNU violence through a series of tweets. In one of the tweets she said, "Wounded students at AIIMS trauma centre told me that goons entered the campus and attacked them with sticks and other weapons. Many had broken limbs and injuries on their heads. One student said the police kicked him several times on his head."

In another tweet, she added, "There is something deeply sickening about a government that allows and encourages such violence to be inflicted on their own children."

Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Aaditya Thackeray condemned the JNU violence. He tweeted, "The violence and brutality faced by students, while protesting, is worrisome. Be it Jamia, be it JNU. Students mustn’t face brutal force! Let them be! These goons must face action. They must be brought to time bound and swift justice."

New Delhi, January 5: Around 50 masked men attacked Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students and vandalised hostels on Sunday evening. University student union president Aishe Ghosh was several others who were severely injured in the attack. Several professors were also sustained injuries. The JNU student union blamed Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists for the attack. However, the BJP’s student wing organisation rejected the claims.

Home Minister Amit Shah asked the Delhi Police to submit the report on the incident. The MHa also appointed Joint CP rank official to investigate the case. After the incident, heavy police was deployed inside the university. Reacting on the violence, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that he is "shocked" to learn about the incident.

The Delhi chief minister also added that he spoke to Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Anil Baijal, and said that the LG is monitoring the situation. As per police, the situation inside the university is normal. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also condemned the attack.
