New Delhi, January 5: Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Delhi police commissioner Amulya Patnaik on the violence that erupted inside the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday evening. Shah asked for a report on the entire incident from the Delhi police. According to reports, Joint Commissioner Western Range, Shalini Singh, will investigate the case and submit the report. Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharamana and S Jaishankar also condemned the violence that took place on the university campus. As per police, the situation inside the university is normal. DCP Southwest Devender Arya told news agency ANI, “At present, no violence is reported from any part of the campus. Today evening, a fight occurred between two groups in which few students were injured and the property was damaged. JNU Administration requested police to enter University to restore peace.”

After the incident, heavy police was deployed inside the university. Reacting ton the violence, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that he is "shocked" to learn about the incident. He tweeted, “I am so shocked to know abt the violence at JNU. Students attacked brutally. Police shud immediately stop violence and restore peace. How will the country progress if our students will not be safe inside univ campus?”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condemned the violence. Gandhi said that "the brutal attack on JNU students & teachers by masked thugs" is shocking. He further added, “The fascists in control of our nation, are afraid of the voices of our brave students. Today’s violence in JNU is a reflection of that fear.”

Jawaharal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU), including President Aishe Ghosh was severly injured in the attack by masked men. According to AIIMS trauma centre, Ghosh got lacerations on forehead. On Sunday evening, around 50 masked men entered the university campus and beat up and vandalised hostels with iron rods. The university student union blamed the ABVP for the attack. However, the ABVP denied such claims. In a statement, the BJP’s student wing organisation said that 25 of its students were seriously injured in the attack, while 11 were missing.
