New Delhi, January 9: Delhi Police on Thursday detained students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), who were marching towards Rashtrapati Bhawan against the violence that took place on the campus on January 5. The protesters were detained near Ambedkar Bhawan. The protest march started from Mandi house. The students decided to take the protest march to the Rashtrapati Bhawan, after JNU student Union’s meeting with the Human Resource and Development Ministry ended without any conclusion. The university student union was demanding the removal of Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar after the January 5 incident. The students who were protesting outside the ministry were also detained. JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh said that they would not compromise over their demand seeking the ouster of the VC. The government also deployed additional security personnel near North-South blocks as a precautionary measure. On Sunday evening, a mob of 50 masked men thrashed the university students on the campus. The goons also vandalised hostels. In the attack, Ghosh, along with several professors, were injured. The student union blamed the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) for the attack. However, the ABVP rejected the allegations. On Wednesday reports surfaced that the Delhi police had identified several people who attacked the JNU students, but no arrest have been made till now.
