New Delhi, January 6: JNU Teachers’ Association wrote an open letter to President Ram Nath Kovind, demanding the removal of Professor M Jagadesh Kumar from his position as the Vice-Chancellor, according to an NDTV news update. Violence erupted inside the JNU campus on Sunday after unidentified goons with faces covered attacked more than 40 people, including teachers and students with iron rods, sledgehammers and hockey sticks.
In a statement, signed by the University's Registrar and tweeted by the Vice-Chancellor Kumar on Sunday, the clash was triggered by students opposing the semester registration. The teacher body today has contradicted the statement and has sought the immediate removal of the VC.
JNUSU President Aishi Ghosh was badly injured and in one of the videos shared by ANI, she was seen profusely bleeding from her head. The attack has been widely condemned. National Students' Union of India(NSUI) will hold a protest at Arts Faculty, North Campus in Delhi University at 2 pm on Monday against yesterday's attack. In another development, following the attack, R. Meena, senior warden of Sabarmati Hostel of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has resigned stating, 'we tried but could not provide security to the hostel.' Earlier in the day, Vice-Chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar urged the students to maintain peace on the campus and stated that the top priority is to protect the academic interest of the students.
The Registrar and Pro-VC of JNU already met LG Anil Baijal on Monday and apprised him of the situation. Police will further talk to the students and start collecting evidence. According to an ANI update, the medical of 35 students is complete, both in AIIMS trauma centre and Safdarjung hospitals.
