A PhD student from the reputed Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is now barred from entering the campus and even denied with the award of degree after she complained of sexual harassment against her guide. In April this year, the complainant acted in contradiction of her PhD guide’ intolerant behaviour. The student alleged that she was “molested, sexually harassed and threatened,” by her professor. However, the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) has now termed her allegations to be “frivolous” and recommended that her degree should be withdrawn, and she should never be employed at the university. According to The Indian Express, the recommendations signed by the ICC Presiding Officer, Vibha Tandon reads, “The complainant should be completely debarred from entering in the JNU campus. She shall not be allowed to take up any course or employment in the JNU in future. She should not be allowed to enter in the JNU campus to attend any academic or non academic proceedings. She should not be allowed to enter in the JNU campus for her personal reasons what so ever.” It further stated that, “The JNU administration…shall not issue any character certificate and no objection certificate to the complainant in future…” KIIT University Violence: Over 40 Injured Following the Law & Engineering Students Clash.
The ICC further asked the complainant to apologise to the university and the defendant for her act. Besides, the commission also advised that the accuser will have to visit the campus for inquiry and she will have to give prior intimation to the Proctor Officer to allow her to enter the premise for the same. During the proceedings, she will be escorted by two female security guards. SNDT Hostel Warden in Mumbai Forces Female Student to Strip.
Quoting in the same report, the complainant told on the other hand, “The ICC was hostile to me from the beginning and had told me not to travel abroad. I’ve submitted my PhD but I’m yet to receive my degree because of which I haven’t been able to apply for a post-doctoral fellowship or a teaching job. The way they have barred me from campus and said I should be escorted by guards, I feel like I’m the criminal.”
After the final inquiry, if the ICC concludes that the allegations made by the student were false or forged or misleading, the commission will take action against her. It said, “the Academic Council may initiate proceedings to withdraw the degree of the complainant,” and that her degree “shall be put on hold till the Academic Council concludes its proceedings.” The Institute’s Vice-Chancellor is yet to take a final decision on the ICC report.
