JNU Protest: Section 144 Imposed Near Parliament Ahead of Students’ March Against Hostel Fee Hike

New Delhi, November 18: In the wake of a protest march to Parliament by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) against hostel fee hike, Section 144 has been imposed near the Parliament. The protest comes on the first day of the Parliament’s Winter Session, which began on Monday and will conclude on December 13. The students have called for a march to Parliament demanding complete roll back of fee hike, dress code and curfew timings. A section of teachers from the university urged students to end their protest and get back to academics. JNU students have been protesting against fee hike and the draft hostel manual. Heavy police deployment was made outside the university’s campus on Monday following which the JNU Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) expressed concern over the deployment of police outside the varsity. According to a report by PTI, the Association said the massive police deployment at the gates of the JNU campus appears to be only for the purpose of preventing the students from taking out their planned march to Parliament. JNU Partially Rolls Back Hostel Fee Hike After Massive Protests, Students Refuse to Call Off Agitation.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Students’ Union (JNUSU) has said it will be a march to “save public education” and to appeal to MPs to take up the cause. On Saturday, the Vice-Chancellor of JNU M Jagadesh Kumar said academic activities had greatly suffered in the past two weeks due to the protests and urged the students to end their strike.
