The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the Justice Arumugasamy Inquiry Committee's probe which is inquiring into the death of former Tamil Nadu CM and AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa.
New Delhi, April 26: The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the Justice Arumugasamy Inquiry Committee's probe which is inquiring into the death of former Tamil Nadu CM and AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa. The committee was set by the Tamil Nadu government following pressure from the ruling party and the opposition DMK.
Jayalalithaa, died on December 5, 2016, was considered as the tallest and most respected politician among the people of the state. Suffering from various complications - including infections - for two months and was being treated on the hospital since September 22, 2016. After the death of Jayalalitha, a fringe occurred in the party on who would lead it after 'Amma' - OP Paneersevlam or Sasikala? Considering her closeness with Jayalalitha, Sasikala was the frontrunner to lead the AIADMK, while Paneersevlam considered himself to be the successor of Amma. This whole chaos raised the questions of death of Amma and the circumstances went against the ruling party.
The state government had then set up an inquiry commission headed by retired High Court judge A Arumughaswamy so the circumstances leading to the death of the AIADMK supremo citing doubts expressed by various people can be addressed.
Even DMK chief M K Stalin also stated that if voted to power in the assembly elections, the first thing his party would do is to probe the mystery surrounding the death of former chief minister Jayalalitha and send those involved behind bars.
