New Delhi, May 27: On the 55th death anniversary of late former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, an array of public leaders paid tribute to him.  On this day in 1964, Nehru breathed his last after being plagued by illness. He died at the age of 75, after leading the nation at its helm for 17 consecutive years.

Among the leaders who paid tribute the first PM of India, include Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi, his predecessor Manmohan Singh, Congress president Rahul Gandhi and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Nehru Death Anniversary: Quotes on Democracy, Dynasty, Communalism And Peace by India’s First PM

"Tributes to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Ji on his death anniversary. We remember his contributions to our nation," Modi said.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, former President Pranab Mukherjee and ex-Vice President Hamid Ansari also paid tributes to Nehru at Shantivan.

Nehru, born on November 14, 1889, remained one of the most revered leaders of India's pre-independence and early post-freedom period. During the struggle against the colonial British rule, Nehru was cumulatively jailed for over 20 years.

His contribution was far-reaching, as a major section of the third world nations, particularly those based in Africa, recall his non-aligned movement initiative in the Cold War period.
