Chandigarh, August 20: In view of Krishna Janmashtami, one of the most-awaited festival of the Hindu community, the Haryana government headed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has declared a public holiday from August 23 to August 24. As per the Haryana general administration department circular, all government offices, schools and educational institutions will remain closed.
"Friday, the 23rd August, 2019 shall be observed as a Gazetted Holiday in Government Offices, Boards, Corporations, Educational and other institutions under Haryana Govt on the occasion of Janmashtami," the notification read. Janmashtami, also referred to as Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, is annually observed to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu.
Janmashtami celebrations will begin from the night of August 23, with puja, fasting and other rituals beginning from the night itself, whereas, the primary celebrations will be held on August 24.
Meanwhile, the Dahi Handi celebrations -- which is the marquee event of Janmashtami each year -- will be held on August 25 in all parts of the nation. The administration in all states and districts have been asked to ensure safe and smooth conduct of Dahi Handi celebrations.
