Srinagar, Sept 15: A joint team of CRPF, Indian Army and Jammu & Kashmir police cracked down on suspected terrorists in Kulgam district in the wee hours of Saturday. Five militants were killed in the encounter, which broke out in Chowgam area of Qazigund town, confirmed IGP Kashmir S P Pani.

Trains between Qazigund and Baramulla have been suspended in view of the security operation. The Chowgam was evacuated to minimise collateral damage.

The incident comes a day after three Pakistani terrorists were gunned down by forces in J&K's Reasi district. The deceased were identified to be cadres of the Jaish-e-Muhammad, who had recently intruded into the Valley after crossing the International Border near Tarnah Nallah.

12 security personnel were also injured in the encounter are being currently treated at the Army's R&R Hospital.

Train services between Qazigund, in South Kashmir, and Baramulla in the North have been suspended.

Meanwhile, an alert has also been sounded in other parts of Kashmir, with the police and CRPF maintaining a vigil.

Newly appointed Governor Satya Pal Malik, while chairing the State Administrative Committee meet last week, said militancy needs to be defeated to bring peace back into the civilians of the Jammu & Kashmir.
