Jammu and Kashmir Police today evacuated around 22 families from an avalanche-prone area to a safer place following heavy snowfall in Kangan, Ganderbal.
Srinagar, February 7: Jammu and Kashmir Police today evacuated around 22 families from an avalanche-prone area to a safer place following heavy snowfall in Kangan, Ganderbal. According to local media reports, an avalanche hit the north portal of the Jawahar Tunnel, towards Valley side, blocking one of the tubes. In the state, snowfall started on Wednesday morning. In upper areas, heavy snowfall continued till late night all across the valley. However, according to the IMD officials, the weather in the valley was likely to improve from Friday Morning. Earlier in the day, heavy rainfall accompanied with hailstones hit plains of North India including Punjab and Delhi-NCR while led to falling in temperatures across the plains. Meanwhile, parts of Himachal Pradesh and higher regions of Uttarakhand received fresh snowfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) also predicted thunderstorm accompanied with hailstorm and gusty winds, at isolated places very likely over Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim and North-East states of Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya.
