Srinagar, August 25: The state flag of Jammu and Kashmir was removed from the Civil Secretariat building in Srinagar on Sunday and only the tricolor was seen atop the building. The latest development comes days after the government abrogated Article 370, which gave special status to the state. According to a report by India Today, soon only the national flag will be seen at all government offices in Jammu and Kashmir. Till last week both the flags were seen at the civil secretariat building. Under special status granted to the region by Article 370, the state was permitted to fly its own state flag in addition to the national flag of India. At present,  not all government offices have taken off the Jammu and Kashmir state flag yet. A top source was quoted in the report saying that the removal of flag is in continuation of abrogation of Article 370 and not dependent on official bifurcation from October 31.

Here's the tweet:

On August 9, President Ram Nath Kovind gave assent to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 which aims at bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories- J&K and Ladakh. Both the regions will officially become Union Territories from October 31. The Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha with 370-70 votes and in the Rajya Sabha with 125-61 votes.

At present, the effective strength of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly is 87, including four seats falling in Ladakh region, which will now be a separate UT without a legislature. Meanwhile, the UT of Ladakh will have Kargil and Leh districts.
