Srinagar, August 6: In a ceasefire violation, Pakistan resorted to heavy mortar shelling and firing from small arms along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday. The unprovoked firing from across the border took place in the Sunderbani sector in Rajouri district, prompting the Indian Army to retaliate. No death or injury has been reported. This came a day after the Modi government scrapped the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370.
According to reports, Pakistani troopers violated the ceasefire and started firing in the Sunderbani sector around 12:45 pm. The cross-border skirmish continued till 2:30 pm, reported news agency ANI. The Indian Army retaliated strongly but the casualties on the Pakistani side could not be known immediately. On August 3, the Indian Army said it foiled an attempt by Pakistan's Border Action Team (BAT) to carry out a strike in Keran sector on the Line of Control (LoC). The BAT attempt had taken place on the intervening night of July 31 and August 1. Four possible Special Services Group (SSG) commandos were killed as the bodies were spotted close to the post on LoC where the action took place.
Later, the Pakistan army alleged that cluster bombs were used by India on the LoC. The Indian Army, however, claimed that its action is directed only against military targets and infiltrating terrorists. Seven Pakistan Posts Destroyed as Indian Army Retaliates to Ceasefire Violations.
The Army said Pakistan forces regularly attempt to push terrorists through infiltrations and opens up with a variety of weapons to assist them. India has taken up these infiltration attempts in numerous meetings at the Directorate of Military Operations level where the "right to respond" is conveyed.
