New Delhi, August 5: In a massive historic move, the Narendra Modi government issued a notification bifurcating the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories. Home Minister Amit Shah announced the revocation of Article 370 as well as Article 35A from J&K and also added that Jammu and Kashmir will no longer be a state. While Jammu and Kashmir will now be a Union Territory with a legislative assembly, Ladakh will be a UT without one. The move came amid uncertainty in Jammu and Kashmir over the past few days with government deploying additional security forces in the state. There were reports as well as rumours on what the Modi government was planning to do. Following the announcement too, close to 8,000 paramilitary troops were airlifted and moved in from Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Assam and other parts of the country to the Kashmir valley. On Monday, Section 144 was imposed in the valley and former chief ministers of the state including Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti were also put under house arrest. Internet connectivity in the state was cut off and at some places cable TV was also suspended.

Uproar in Parliament

The announcement made by Amit Shah was followed by a huge uproar in the Rajya Sabha as Opposition MPs objected to the Modi government's big move.

PDP RS MPs Nazir Ahmad Laway and MM Fayaz protested in Parliament premises after resolution revoking Article 370 from J&K was moved by Shah in Rajya Sabha. The 2 PDP MPs were asked to go out of the House after they attempted to tear the Constitution. MM Fayaz also tore his kurta in protest.

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad also protested the government's move and called it the murder of Constitution.

Meanwhile, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) extended support to the government's proposal. BSP MP Satish Chandra Mishra said, "Our party gives complete support. We want that the Bill be passed. Our party is not expressing any opposition to Article 370 Bill and the other Bill."
