Srinagar, January 22: At least two terrorists have been gunned down after an encounter broke out between security forces and militants in Shopian region of Jammu and Kashmir. According to a tweet by ANI, the gunfight broke out in Zainaporaduring a cordon and search operation by the security forces. Reports inform that the firing exchanges were underway in the orchards of Heff Shermal village. More details are awaited. The area has been sealed off to prevent the militants from escaping the site. Reports inform that Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Special Operations Group (SOG) of state police were involved in the counter-insurgency operation.
On Monday, three unidentified militants were killed in an encounter with the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district. An Army official informed that a cordon-and-search operation was launched in Hapatnaar area following information about the presence of militants in the area. On January 20, Pakistan violated ceasefire by resorting to small arms firing on forward Indian posts along the International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district. In 2018, Jammu and Kashmir recorded 2,936 instances of ceasefire violations by Pakistan, which is the highest in the past 15 years with an average of eight cases daily. According to a report by PTI, 61 people have lost their lives and over 250 were reported to be injured. According to statistics, Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire over three times more in 2018 as compared to 2017. In 2017, 971 cases were reported in which 31 people including 12 civilians and 19 security forces personnel were killed and 151 suffered injuries.
