Jammu and Kashmir, which has 90 assembly seats up for grab, went to polls in three phases. Of the 90 seats, 24 seats went to polls in the first phase on September 18. The second phase of polling was held on September 18 in 26 constituencies, while the polling for remaining 40 seats was held on October 1. The list of prominent candidates in the fray includes National Conference leader Omar Abdullah, who is contesting from Budgam and Ganderbal seats; Sajad Gani Lone of People's Conference who is contesting from Handwara and Kupwara seats; Pradesh Congress Committee president Tariq Hamid Karra, who is a candidate from Batamaloo seat; and BJP state president Ravindra Raina, who is contesting from Nowshera seat.

The other notable candidates are Congress' Ghulam Ahmad Mir (Dooru), PDP leaders Waheed Para (Pulwama), Iltija Mufti (Bijbehara), Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari (Chanapora), CPI(M) veteran Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami (Kulgam) and former deputy chief ministers Muzaffar Hussain Baig and Tara Chand.

This is the first assembly election since 2014 and the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. The 2014 polls threw a hung verdict. The PDP won 28 seats, BJP 25, NC 15 and Congress 12 in the 87-member assembly.
