Srinagar, January 2: Broadband high-speed internet connectivity has been restored at 80 government hospitals in the Kashmir Valley, Kashmir Zone Police informed on Thursday. According to reports, the places where connectivity has been restored include health centers and offices linked to Department of Health, across the Kashmir valley. On Wednesday, Short Message Service (SMS) facility resumed in Kashmir after nearly five months of shutdown.

All network and landline connectivity were suspended across Jammu and Kashmir since August 5 in view of security concerns following the Centre’s decision to abrogate Article 370. On October 14, postpaid mobile services were restored in the remaining parts of Jammu and Kashmir. The government had abrogated Article 370 and also bifurcated the former state into Union Territories (UTs) of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, which came into being on October 31.

According to reports, most services, except mobile internet, were restored in Jammu within a week after the shutdown. However, in Kashmir, the landlines and post-paid services being restored in phases. Jammu and Kashmir administration spokesman Rohit Kansal was quoted in reports saying that it was decided to restore internet connectivity to all government hospitals with effect from midnight of December 31 besides fully restoring SMS on mobile phones.
