Srinagar, August 7: A 17-year-old boy drowned in the Jhelum river after he was chased by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, reports said. The deceased was identified as Osaib Altaf. The incident took place on August 5 when Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the central government's decision to scrap the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370.
According to a HuffPost India report, Osaib Altaf along with some other boys were playing at a playground in Srinagar's Palpora area when they were suddenly cornered by CRPF personnel on a footbridge. "Seeing no way out, the boys jumped into the river. While others were saved by the quick response of labourers extracting sand on the river, Osaib couldn’t make it," the victim's father was quoted as saying.
