New Delhi, December 18: A single judge bench of the Delhi High Court, before which a clutch of petitions seeking release of detained students and locals were filed, has transferred the same to a division bench headed by Chief Justice DN Patel. The matter has been posted for hearing on December 19. The petitioners have demanded the court to order the release of detainees against whom no cases have been filed. Following the violence which erupted at a Jamia protest rally on Sunday, the police launched a brutal crackdown in South Delhi region. A total of 47 persons were detained following the violence, including scores of students. The police, however, has formally arrested only 10 accused who have past criminal backgrounds.
The Fir has been registered against seven persons, including former Congress MLA Asif Khan. Apart from Khan, the six other accused were produced before the Saket court on Tuesday. The bench had sent them to judicial custody for 14 days.

The violence in South Delhi was reported on Sunday, after a section of demonstrators part of the Jamia march against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) resorted to vandalism. They reportedly pelted stones and set four DTC buses on fire. This prompted the police to launch a brutal crackdown, with members of the riot control squad reportedly barging inside the Jamia campus.
The Jamia Chief Proctor issued a statement claiming that the police was not permitted to enter inside the varsity. He further alleged that the law enforcement officials brutalised students and staff members inside the campus. University Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar registered an FIR the next day and demanded a judicial inquiry into the matter.
